Sealants

What Are Sealants?

Sealants are substances designed to block the passage of fluid, air, or other materials through openings, joints, or surfaces. It is a thin plastic covering applied to the upper surface of teeth, especially on molars and premolars.

Their main purpose is to create a shield that prevents unwanted elements from passing through gaps. Once the tooth sealants are applied, a dentist hardens the material to protect the teeth from cavity-causing bacteria

Molars, or teeth at the back of the mouth, have deep grooves that help you chew up food. Coating the affected areas with sealants prevents bacteria from reaching and hiding in them.

Tooth sealants are one of the most common preventive dentistry treatments nowadays. Approximately 42% of children (6-11 years old) and 48% of adolescents (12-19 years old) have dental sealants on their natural teeth.

Benefits Of Using Sealants

Benefit-Of-Using-Sealants

Some major benefits of using tooth sealants are as follows:

  • Protection Against Cavities

It provides significant protection against cavities by covering the top surface of molars and premolars with a plastic material. Studies show that sealants can minimize the risk of decay by up to 80% within the first two years.

  • Reduces Deep Grooves

Molars have deep grooves on the surface of the teeth that are difficult to clean, no matter how well you brush. It acts as a physical barrier, blocking food particles and bacteria from settling in pits and fissures where cavities form.

  • Safety And Prevention

Dental sealants for adults are generally safe for children. The ADA stated that there is no evidence to suggest that exposure to BPA in dental sealants has any adverse effects on humans. Not all sealants contain BPA; however, resin sealants contain a small amount of it that does not cause any harm.

  • Cost-Effectiveness And Durability

High-quality sealants, especially those based on silicon, are highly durable and can last several times longer than traditional ones, thereby reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

Many dental insurance companies include tooth sealants in the list of treatments covered under their general policies. It also prevents the need for expensive treatment at a fraction of the cost, making it one of the best preventive choices for children.

  • Long-Lasting

Applying sealants to children’s teeth will protect them during the most cavity-prone years (6-11 years). They can last 5 – 10 years or more with care and good oral hygiene. The longevity of sealants depends on good oral hygiene, adhering to a balanced diet, and scheduling regular dental checkups.

Are Dental Sealants Safe For Children

Children and adolescents are considered the best candidates for dental sealants. Most parents have concerns about traces of BPA found in some resin-based sealants. However, the levels of BPA are low, which does not cause any harm. In general, dental sealants for kids prone to tooth decay on their back teeth are safe and effective.

Children can receive sealants on their permanent teeth as soon as they emerge. This way, dental sealants can protect teeth from the ages of 6 through 14, which is called the cavity-prone years.

Ways To Prevent Cavities In Children

Dental sealant is not a treatment, replacement, or routine; it is a preventive measure to protect children’s teeth from cavities.

Here are some of the other ways you can protect your children’s teeth from cavities:

  • Children must brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes twice a day.
  • Young children require adult supervision until they are at least 6 years old.
  • Start flossing in between the teeth to remove plaque.
  • Encourage healthy eating habits instead of junk food.
  • Avoid sugary snacks, candies, sodas, and starchy or sticky foods that cling to teeth and remove bacteria.
  • Visit your dentist for dental checkups.

How Dental Sealants Are Applied

This procedure is simple and painless, but it is performed after evaluation by a dentist. The treatment is carried out by following the steps given below:

  • Initially, your dentist will begin by cleaning your teeth to remove any food or plaque from their surface.
  • The surface of the teeth is carefully dried and isolated.
  • An acid Etch is applied on the teeth to create a smooth surface that the sealant will adhere to more effectively.
  • The surface of the teeth is rinsed and dried again.
  • Then, the sealants are applied using a brush or an applicator. A “special light” is applied to harden that area, which typically takes 10 to 30 seconds to complete.

Dental sealants can bear biting and chewing forces and last several years with proper care and maintenance. It is recommended to plan a routine checkup every six months.

Recovery Time Of Sealants?

Dental sealant requires no recovery time after the application. You can go back to your daily routine shortly after the treatment.

Typically, it is recommended to wait for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the sealants to bond fully. However, it’s essential to note that hard, sticky, or chewy foods can wear down your sealants.

How Long Does It Last?

Dental sealants typically last 5-10 years, depending on the type of sealant, oral hygiene, chewing habits, and regular dental checkups.

Resin sealants typically provide longer protection, often lasting up to 10 years or more with proper care. Whereas glass sealants generally have a shorter lifespan of up to 5 years.

Key Takeaways

Refrain from biting on ice-hard candies or using your teeth as a tool, as these habits can chip or wear down your sealants. If you have bruxism (a habit of grinding your teeth), use a custom-fitted mouthguard to prevent damage to both teeth and sealants.
